Covidien rose $.49 or .9 percent, to $55.99.

Patterson rose $.09 or .3 percent, to $34.09.

PerkinElmer fell $.12 or .4 percent, to $31.51.

Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. fell $.31 or .5 percent, to $62.12.

Varian Medical Systems Inc. rose $1.35 or 2.0 percent, to $70.12.

Waters fell $.05 or .1 percent, to $84.14.
