GOP TV ad links RI congressman to child molester
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — House Republicans are airing an ad in Rhode Island linking freshman Democratic Rep. David Cicilline (sis-ihl-EE'-nee) to a child molester and murderer he defended when he was a lawyer two decades ago.
The ad by the National Republican Congressional Committee started airing Tuesday for Brendan Doherty.
Republicans haven't won a seat in the House in heavily Democratic Rhode Island since 1992. Both national parties have poured hundreds of thousands of dollars into TV ads in the final week of the race.
Cicilline's campaign calls the ad ridiculous and says voters deserve a debate on the issues. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee calls it "the worst kind of gutter politics."
The NRCC says the attack is fair because Cicilline chose to represent such criminals as a defense attorney.
