News Summary: Microsoft ushers in Windows 8 era

EIGHT BALL: Microsoft held a special event in New York on Thursday to herald the arrival of Windows 8, the most dramatic overhaul of the personal computer market's dominant operating system in 17 years. More than 1,000 PCs and other devices running on Windows 8 go on sale Friday.

TILE TIME: Windows 8 features a mosaic of tiles to display applications instead of a start menu. It works on tablet computers in addition to PCs and can be controlled by touch as well as a keyboard.

GET IT? Windows 8 could confuse and alienate longtime Windows users.
