RI's Bryant gets $1M gift from Hasbro official

SMITHFIELD, R.I. (AP) — Bryant University has received a $1 million gift from the foundation established by the chairman of the Hasbro toy company's executive committee to support the work of the school's Institute for Public Leadership.

The gift announced Tuesday by university President Ronald Machtley and Alan Hassenfeld, chairman of the Executive Committee of Hasbro Inc., was from Hassenfeld Family Initiatives LLC.

In recognition of the gift, the Smithfield, R.I.-based university has renamed the center the Hassenfeld Institute for Public Leadership.

The Institute focuses on offering leadership programs to public officials and others involved in the development, management, and implementation of public policy.

Hassenfeld said in a statement that Machtley, a former congressman, understands the pressing need for ethical, effective leadership.

Machtley said Hassenfeld was the visionary behind the creation of the institute.
