How the major stock indexes fared Tuesday


U.S. stocks got walloped on Tuesday, as companies turned in weak third-quarter results that spooked investors.

The Dow Jones industrial average lost 243.36 points, or 1.8 percent, to 13,102.53.

The Standard & Poor's 500 lost 20.71 points, or 1.4 percent, to 1,413.11.

The Nasdaq composite index lost 26.50 points, or 0.9 percent, to 2,990.46.

For the week:

The Dow is down 240.98 points, or 1.8 percent.

The S&P 500 is down 20.08 points, or 1.4 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 15.16 points, or 0.5 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 884.97 points, or 7.2 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 155.51 points, or 12.4 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 385.31 points, or 14.8 percent.
