Churchill Downs looks to add September racing
LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Churchill Downs may be nearing the finish line in its pursuit of September racing.
The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission is scheduled to meet Tuesday afternoon, and the assignment of racing dates for thoroughbred tracks is expected to be on the agenda.
Last week, a panel of commission members recommended that Churchill pick up September racing dates that traditionally go to Turfway Park in northern Kentucky. The Louisville track hopes to capitalize on good September weather to attract lots of fans and horsemen.
September racing would be in addition to Churchill's spring and fall meets.
While Churchill wants to expand its race schedule, Turfway is looking to reduce its schedule. Besides losing September racing, the suburban Florence track would limit its February schedule to two racing days under the proposed schedule.
