Patterson rose $.32 or .9 percent, to $34.90.

PerkinElmer fell $.02 or .1 percent, to $29.78.

Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. rose $.15 or .3 percent, to $59.90.

Varian Medical Systems Inc. fell $.34 or .6 percent, to $60.67.

Waters rose $.27 or .3 percent, to $84.59.
