Turkey: officers convicted of plotting coup
ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkish state TV says a court has convicted three former military officers of plotting to overthrow the government in a case that has jailed hundreds of active and retired military officers and has helped curtail the Turkish military's hold on politics.
The Istanbul court on Friday initially sentenced the three to life imprisonment but later reduced the sentence to a 20-year jail term. Verdicts are still being read for more than 350 other defendants.
The government has hailed the trial and other similar ones as a move toward greater democracy. Critics say the case is a political one aimed at silencing government opponents.
