Yonkers seeks bigger slice of film industry

YONKERS, N.Y. (AP) — The city of Yonkers is seeking a bigger slice of the filmmaking industry.

Yonkers Mayor Michael Spano announced Tuesday that the city was waiving its usual permit fees for filming.

He said Yonkers has revived its Office of Film and Photography to try to draw production crews away from New York City and other metropolitan area towns.

He said the city also is offering incentives to production companies that buy supplies at local businesses.

He spoke at Yonkers Stage, a warehouse soundstage where the movie "Winter's Tale" is set to be filmed. It stars Russell Crowe.

He said there have been 78 productions in the city so far this year, up from 35 days in 2011.

Some films that have been filmed in Yonkers include "Maid in Manhattan" and "Doubt."
