Becton, Dickinson & Co. rose $.18 or .2 percent, to $78.80.

Covidien rose $.59 or 1.0 percent, to $58.37.

Patterson rose $.10 or .3 percent, to $34.65.

PerkinElmer rose $.53 or 1.8 percent, to $29.93.

Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. rose $.40 or .7 percent, to $60.37.

Varian Medical Systems Inc. fell $.49 or .8 percent, to $61.27.

Waters unchanged at $85.15.
