Sucampo says constipation drug approved in UK

BETHESDA, Md. (AP) — Sucampo Pharmaceuticals Inc. said Wednesday that U.K. regulators approved its constipation drug Amitiza.

Sucampo said the drug is approved to treat chronic constipation that is not caused by other diseases or medications. The drug was approved for adults whose constipation has not been helped by changes in diet, exercise, or other measures.

Japanese regulators approved Amitiza in July, and the drug is also approved in the U.S. and Switzerland. Sucampo said it wants to get Amitiza approved in new markets and as a treatment for other conditions, including constipation caused by opioid medications.

Shares of Sucampo Pharmaceuticals rose 2 cents to $4.41 in morning trading.
