Israeli court indicts 9 teens for injuring Arab

JERUSALEM (AP) — An Israeli court has indicted nine Jewish teenagers for seriously injuring an Arab youth in an assault condemned by Israel's leaders as a hate crime.

The indictments filed Tuesday in Jerusalem charged the teenagers with causing grievous bodily harm, incitement to violence and carrying out a racially motivated attack.

The attack in downtown Jerusalem 10 days ago prompted President Shimon Peres, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other Israeli leaders to publicly condemn it.

According to the indictment, the teenagers cursed and shouted racial abuse at a group of Arabs passing by and then assaulted them, injuring one of them seriously.

Jews and Arab Muslims and Christians usually coexist relatively peacefully in Jerusalem, but tensions simmer beneath the surface, tied to the decades-long Israel-Palestinian conflict.
