Covidien rose $.51 or .9 percent, to $55.58.

Patterson fell $.08 or .2 percent, to $34.08.

PerkinElmer fell $.15 or .5 percent, to $27.26.

Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. rose $.11 or .2 percent, to $56.42.

Varian Medical Systems Inc. rose $.56 or 1.0 percent, to $59.35.

Waters rose $.50 or .6 percent, to $77.60.
