Covidien rose $.17 or .3 percent, to $55.24.

Patterson fell $.22 or .6 percent, to $33.93.

PerkinElmer fell $.17 or .6 percent, to $27.25.

Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. fell $.30 or .5 percent, to $56.01.

Varian Medical Systems Inc. rose $.04 or .1 percent, to $58.83.

Waters fell $.04 or .1 percent, to $77.06.
