Becton, Dickinson & Co. rose $.62 or .8 percent, to $75.37.

Covidien rose $.62 or 1.2 percent, to $54.12.

Patterson rose $.42 or 1.2 percent, to $34.89.

PerkinElmer rose $.08 or .3 percent, to $25.88.

Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. fell $.53 or 1.0 percent, to $51.38.

Varian Medical Systems Inc. fell $.12 or .2 percent, to $60.65.

Waters fell $.97 or 1.2 percent, to $78.50.
