OAS meeting backs Argentina's claim to Falklands

Most participants in the Organization of American States annual meeting in Bolivia have backed Argentina's claim to the Falklands Islands and are calling on Britain to begin talks toward a peaceful resolution of the dispute.

Various foreign ministers from OAS member states on Tuesday read resolutions supporting Argentina. Argentine Foreign Minister Hector Timerman said his government has extended its hand to Britain to "start a dialogue and resolve this colonial conflict."

Canada echoed Britain's position on the Falklands: that the islands' residents have the right to decide their own future. The U.S. took no position.

Both Argentina and Britain claim the islands, which are known as the Malvinas in Latin America. The two countries fought a war over them in 1982.
