The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission has set opening dates for the spring shrimp season -- Monday for waters in the central parts of the Louisiana coast and May 21 for other areas.
State waters between the eastern shore of South Pass of the Mississippi River to the Atchafalaya River ship channel open on Monday.
On May 21, shrimping will open everywhere else along the coast.
The season opening was based on biologists' sampling of shrimp populations and projections on when half of the inshore brown shrimp would reach 100 count per pound or larger.
Officials say Louisiana fishermen brought in about 90.5 million pounds of shrimp last year.
