Short film on W.Va. coalfields set to air Thursday

A half-hour documentary film about the Coal River Valley will premiere on LinkTV on the second anniversary of the Upper Big Branch mine disaster.

The explosion at the former Massey Energy mine killed 29 men on April 5, 2010. It also inspired the philanthropic media group to venture into West Virginia's southern coalfields weeks later.

"West Virginia: Hillbillies, Coal Miners, Treehuggers & God" airs at 9 p.m. Thursday.

The film explores underground mining, mountaintop removal mining and the successful struggle of a community to relocate Marsh Fork Elementary School from the shadow of a 2.8 billion-gallon coal slurry dam.

The Los Angeles-based Annenberg Foundation donated $2.5 million to that cause.

LinkTV is available as basic service nationwide on DIRECTV and DISH Network.
