Destination of Indian Software

Source: NASSCOM

India exports its software, IT services and e-commerce solutions to about 95 countries across the globe. Of the $4 billion of Indian software export revenues during 1999-2000, almost 62 percent was exported to North America while around 32.5 percent was contributed by our European destinations.

Overseas Development Centers

The growth of the offshore model of software exports has also received a significant shot in the arm thanks to the fact that the Top 50 global hardware and software companies have invested in either R&D or software development facilities in India.

Sun Microsystems India Pvt. Ltd., a well known player in the Indian IT market, for instance, has made major investments in infrastructure and facilities in India, besides substantial investments in partners to upgrade skills and know-how.

Since becoming a wholly owned subsidiary in India, Sun has invested substantially in setting up a logistics center in India, a full-fledged development center which already employs about 160 developers and is growing.

In partnership with the Ministry of Information Technology of Government of India, Nasscom and CMC, Sun has also invested about Rs. 13 million in setting up the first competency center for Java in India which is located in Hyderabad. To encourage the booming software industry in India, Sun is working with Nasscom to achieve Java based development tools, provide source code licensing of the Solaris operating environment and provide partnership to Indian software companies to reach international markets.

Consolidating its presence in India and reflecting the importance that Sun attaches to India as a business partner, Sun is also fast penetrating into the Indian domestic market.
