The Format of Play

playinggolf.jpg (12738 bytes)

A strokeplay competition with 32 two-man teams will be contested over 72 holes. Play will be in fourballs with a one tee start for all four rounds. There will be a re-draw after rounds 1, 2 and 3 based on team scores with the leading teams teeing off last on the following day.

The rules of golf as adopted by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews and the United States Golf Association will govern play, with the exception of local rules which will be available at the first tee on each day of play. All rulings will be handled by the World Cup committee and their decision will be final.

In the event of a tie for first place in the World Cup Golf, there will be a sudden death play-off at the conclusion of the final round.

If two players from the same country tie for the International Trophy there will be no playoff; if two players from the same country tie with one or more players from different countries, or if two players from different countries tie, there will be a sudden death play-off.

Montgomerie, who leads the European Order of Merit which he has won a record six years in a row, will be competing in his sixth World Cup. He won the International Trophy as the low individual  player in 1997 at the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island, S.C. Dean Robertson will join Montgomerie in representing Scotland in his World Cup.

James and Peter Baker will be defending the title won last year by Nick Faldo and David Carter. England won its first World Cup a year ago with a total of 568, two shots better than Italy and three ahead of the United States.

James, Captain of the European Ryder Cup Team competed at the Country Club, Brookline, Mass. last month, will be joined by three other members of the team -- Montgomerie, Jarmo Sandelin of Sweden who will be paired with Gabriel Hjerstedt and Padraig Harrington of Ireland who will play with Paul McGinley. Among the other players who will compete for their respective countries will be Frank Nobilo of New Zealand, David Frost of South Africa and Richard Zokol of Canada, all past winners on the U.S. PGA Tour, and Italy's Costantino Rocca, another Ryder Cup player.

The remainder of the 32-team field was finalized with the completion of the World Cup Eastern Zone Qualifier at the Asian Nations Cup at Kota Permai Golf and Country Club in Shah Alam. The four remaining World Cup qualifying spots were won by Korea, Myanmar, Taiwan and Phillipines.
