October 21st-22nd, 2002 in London

With a GSP of $1.3 trillion and a population of over 34 million, California has the largest and most diverse economy in the United States. A combination of this diversity and a firm commitment by the State to support its business community has allowed California to maintain its leadership position even in these times of global business slowdown.

The most creative and entrepreneurial IT community in the world provides a cornerstone for California's economic foundation. Over a million Californians work in high-tech, the State produces almost one-third of the nation's exports for the sector, over 20% of U.S. software companies call California home, and historically California attracts almost 50% of venture capital funding invested in the U.S.

The State has joined with the private sector in nurturing and supporting this growth through the efforts of the California Technology, Trade and Commerce Agency (CTTCA), which serves as the State's principal catalyst for innovation, investment, and economic opportunity. CTTCA maintains 12 offices around the world to assist California businesses expanding their export markets, to facilitate foreign investment into California, and to build bridges to potential strategic partners.

In the IT sector, for example, CTTCA created the premier international partnership and investment forum known as "Cal-IT." Held each autumn in London since 1996, Cal-IT provides a platform for the year's elite emerging IT companies to strut their stuff before more than 500 European representatives of leading technology companies, venture capital firms, technology integrators, financial institutions and members of the media. The selection of each year's hottest, private companies is extremely competitive, completed with the counsel of a Technology Advisory Board whose membership reads like a Who's Who of Europe's industry leaders: British Telecom, Deutsche Telekom, Ericsson, Nokia, Cap Gemini Ernst & Young, Siemens Venture Capital, 3i, Schlumberger, Ltd. and more. The results of this program have been phenomenal. Two years ago, over 305 meetings between the California IT companies and their potential partners were pre-scheduled by CTTCA to take place during the two day conference. Ultimately, over $47 million in deals resulted from introductions and negotiations that occurred at Cal-IT. Last year, in the face of a global economic contraction and only five weeks after terrorist attacks had brought worldwide business to a stand still, Cal-IT broke all records for number of meetings, which rose to 365, and monetary value of the deals struck, which rose to almost $80 million.

Andy Mulholland, Chief Technology Officer for Cap Gemini Ernst & Young, is a big fan of Cal-IT. "The Cal-IT network taps into the globally renowned hot bed of technological innovation in California, drawing out hidden talent," Mulholland says. "It then applies a stringent filtering process that ensures that the presenting companies are the best available before giving them access to European delegates. The resulting Forum mixes the best undiscovered technology companies with the most active European investors and technology companies -- it's a win-win situation."

The State is determined not to rest on its laurels, however. This year, the format has expanded to include the new theme: "If you want to know what's happening in IT, you NEED to know what's happening in California." Thus, for the first time, Cal-IT will feature not only presentations by elite emerging companies, but also keynotes, panel discussions and workshops with participation from California's industry trendsetters including Qualcomm, Sun Microsystems, Handspring, and many others. At Cal-IT, one will get a broad view of the latest developments from the emerging private companies to rapidly expanding stars to long established global leaders.

"We often hear the phrase 'reality has set in' when speaking of IT in the current investment cycle," says Jeffrey Gersick, Managing Director of CTTCA's offices in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. "That is true, but 'reality' must include a recognition that technology has become an integral part of our daily lives. It is my goal that Cal-IT continue to provide the best roadmap for anybody eager to know what's coming around the corner in IT innovation."

Centrata delivers rapid ROI by reducing the capital and operating expenses of running large heterogeneous datacenters. Some of the largest enterprises and service providers use Centrata to streamline their IT service offerings and operational processes, automate service request fulfillment, and accurately allocate service delivery costs.

Centrata's professional services team and solution partners work with clients to identify pain points, ROI, and high impact projects, and assist with project planning and implementation. Founded in 2000, Centrata's intellectual foundation derives from the research work on service-centric modeling of IT infrastructures that was done by the founders at the MIT Laboratory for Computer Science. The company was funded by Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers, one of the premier venture capitalist firms. Other investors of Centrata include American Express, Invesco, and Sumitomo.

Centrata's management team come from the leading enterprise software, datacenter operations, and network infrastructure companies, with decades of experience in delivering enterprise datacenter-related products and services.

Array Networks has pioneered a highly scalable Application Network Architecture (ANA) that can direct, re-direct, accelerate, secure, and analyze all internal and external Web traffic. The company was first to integrate eight networking features into a single, high performance platform including Server Load Balancing, SSL Acceleration, Reverse Proxy Caching, Content Rewrite, N+1 Clustering (up to 32 systems), Webwall security, Global Server Load Balancing and Compression.

Recently, Array Networks introduced a new class of secure Web traffic management solutions, the Array SP (Security Proxy) family. The Array SP and SP-C accelerate and secure Web traffic from end-to-end (client to server) and deliver the performance needed to handle the increasing performance challenges of Web services. In July 2002, Array Networks announced the Array SR (Security Reconnaissance) to scan, analyze and record Internet traffic including HTTP, POP, IMAP, and SMTP transmissions at Gigabit wire speed.

The company has over 180 partners and customers. Based in Campbell, California with 110+ employees, Array Networks has offices in the UK, France, Germany, China, Korea, Japan, and the U.S.
