Vladimir A. Bryntsalov and his empire

EARLY LIFE
Born Nov. 23, 1946, in southern Russian city of Cherkessk. Trained as a mining engineer.

BUSINESS BEGINNINGS
Started producing honey products in late-Soviet period, then took charge of a privatized Moscow pharmaceutical plant in early 1990s. Amassed fortune from vodka, elected to Duma in 1995, and made failed run for presidency in 1996.

AMBITION
To become Russia's top medicines producer.

INFLUENCE
Has forged business ties with Russian health regulators, hooked up with a Washington lobbyist, and campaigned in Duma for restrictions on drug imports.

FINANCIAL EMPIRE
Moscow-based flagship is ZAO Bryntsalov, a pharmaceutical company that produces antibiotics, insulin, cough syrups, and other products. Bryntsalov values the factory's assets, land included, at $1.6 billion. Other holdings include a network of 25 pharmacies, Ferane-1 Moscow vodka distillery, Medinvest bank, and interests in agricultural cooperatives, wineries, and textile plants.
