BUSINESS WEEK E.BIZ -- UPSTARTS

Brivo Systems

Born: May, 1999, in Arlington, Va.

Parents: Mark A. Stein, Carter H. Griffin, and Timothy J. Ogilvie, all refugees from the Washington, D.C., office of Kaiser Associates, corporate-strategy consultants.

Funding: More than $20 million, with the lion's share from Chicago venture capitalist firm Duchossois TECnology Partners.

Product: A Smart Box that lets you receive packages when you're not home, for $10 to $20 a month. The box, which sends you an e-mail when a package arrives, is being tested in 100 households in Silicon Valley and the D.C. area. Commercial service is planned for early next year.

Inspiration: The trio thought of the idea when they noticed that the medical clinic next to their office had multiple metal boxes outside for labs picking up blood and urine samples. Why not a box for deliveries to homes?
