BUSINESS WEEK E.BIZ -- PERSONALITIES

Geoffrey Moore's Laws

Focus on what you do best. ''Outsource the context, insource the core.'' If you're an oil exploration company, your stock price doesn't depend on whether you're good at accounting. Let someone else do it. ''Chief operating officers should think of themselves as chief outsourcing officers.''

Forget quarterly earnings reports. So what if you don't meet expectations for a while? Go ahead, live it up. Spend to adapt your business to the Information Age. The returns will come down the road, and your shareholders will smile.

Find yourself. ''Corporations need to find points of balance that can absorb and survive shocking changes in market dynamics. That balance is to be found in culture.'' Maybe it's a culture that emphasizes operational excellence, like IBM. Or maybe it's one built on product leadership, like Microsoft. Decide who you are and play to that strength.

It's the stock price, stupid. That's all that matters. It will tell you if you're succeeding. ''Total market capitalization has become the new scorecard for business competitions.''
