ONLINE EXTRA: A Good Intern Is Hard to Find
Tips for finding student helpers and making the best use of them in today's tight labor market

With unemployment at 4%, employers are turning to an overlooked labor pool: student interns. Long gone are the days when interns just made photocopies and coffee. Now, grateful employers put interns to work writing marketing plans, reviewing patent applications, and building Web sites.

But finding a good intern isn't easy. The number of open positions on file at most schools dwarfs the number of interested students. And if your internship program is poorly organized, word will get around, making it even tougher to attract students in future years. The Web sites below can help you find good interns and keep them productive:

The National Society for Experiential Education (www.nsee.org) promotes internships, cooperative education, and other workplace-education programs. The NSEE also publishes The Internship as Partnership, a primer for employers.

The Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation (www.emkf.org/Entrepreneurship/programs/keip.cfm) provides grants to subsidize interns' salaries. Find out if Kauffman is working with a college in your area.

Boston College (www.bc.edu/Internships) Internship information for employers

The National Academy Foundation (www.naf-education.org) places disadvantaged high school students in paid internships with companies of all sizes.

Job postings (www.wetfeet.com, www.vault.com, and www.usinterns.com) These three sites encourage employers to post internships for undergraduate or MBA students. Make sure your position is clearly labeled "internship" so it isn't confused with permanent job postings.
