These Web sites offer help on international contacts, financing, coming events, and more

So, you think you're ready to start doing business abroad? Spend a little time at these Web sites, and you'll have a better idea how to go about it. Several offer listings of foreign trade missions in your industry, and a mission can certainly help you get the lay of a foreign land. Others provide important background information to help you decide if doing business abroad makes sense in the first place.

For additional help finding trade missions, contact your state's export-assistance program, your industry's trade association, or private business groups such as your local arms of the Chamber of Commerce and the Organization of Women in International Trade.

www.export.gov Make this export portal from the U.S. Commerce Dept. your first stop. Here you'll find links to a variety of export pages on other Commerce Web Sites, such as the Export Finance matchmaker, which will hook you up with lenders who finance export sales. There's also a page for Commerce's business-consulting program, which tells you how to get free assistance from a government trade specialist.

www.USATrade.gov This homepage for the U.S. Commercial Service offers listings of trade missions and other upcoming events (click on Trade Events), as well as background information on exporting, global resources, and market research.

www.ita.doc.gov/doctm Here you'll find a calendar of upcoming federal trade events and missions. For instance, there's a February, 2001, mission to India for the medical-devices industry.

http://www.investineurope.com Invest In Europe, a private consulting firm that helps companies do business in Europe, offers country-specific data. Click on Denmark, for instance, to get basic economic indicators, such as retail sales and unemployment levels, a country map, and information about government grants to U.S. companies.

http://www.sba.gov/OIT/export/useac.html This Small Business Administration page offers contact information for the SBA's U.S Export Assistance Centers around the country.
