Trial Lawyers on the Campaign Trail JAMES F. HUMPHREYS West Virginia's asbestos-trial king is running for a House seat. He has raised $5.6 million, of which $5 million is his own. The district heavily favors Democrats, but Humphreys faces a credible GOP foe who has raised $900,000. MICHAEL V. CIRESI Minnesota's point man in that state's tobacco suit is aiming for a Senate seat. He has put in $2.6 million of his own and raised $390,000 from lawyers. He faces a tough four-way primary on Sept. 12. ED BERNSTEIN The Nevada personal-injury lawyer and TV talk-show host is the likely Democratic nominee for Senate. He has coughed up $900,000 on his own and tapped fellow lawyers for $144,000. He trails in the general election but is gaining ground.
