A Plethora of Pathogens

These deadly diseases can devastate economies.

CLASSICAL SWINE FEVER
Highly contagious disease, which decimated pig herds in The Netherlands in 1997 and 1998. New outbreak in England.

NIPAH
Newly identified virus causes brain inflammation in pigs and people. Since 1998, 1 million pigs have been destroyed in Malaysia and Singapore.

CHICKEN INFLUENZA
5 million chickens killed in a 1984 Pennsylvania outbreak, costing $63 million. In 1997 the flu jumps to humans, killing six in Hong Kong.

HEARTWATER DISEASE
Tick-borne disease causes high fever and respiratory failure in cattle and horses. This infection is deadly unless discovered very early.

SCREW WORM
Maggots buried in living tissue cause inflammation, even death. The U.S. has spent millions to eradicate it, but sightings in Texas and Florida indicate it is sneaking in.
