Exotic Newcastle Disease The blight this year dealt a huge blow to Tyson Foods in Mexico. ORIGINS An outbreak occurred this spring in Mexico. Origins unknown. HOW IT SPREADS The virus is primarily spread by bird-to-bird contact. It can also be spread via contaminated feed, water, or clothing, especially shoes. AT RISK Poultry and parrots can be infected with the virus. DAMAGE This year, 13.6 million birds were destroyed, at a loss of approximately $14 million.
