Berezovsky's Dizzying Ups and Downs 1975 Receives PhD in applied mathematics from Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow and goes to work in its Institute of Management. 1989 Creates car dealership chain Logovaz and earns billions of rubles. Rivals accused him of delaying payments to carmaker Autovaz. 1994 JUNE Suffers burns when car bomb explodes next to his Mercedes, decapitating his driver. Crime unsolved. 1995 MARCH Gains effective control of state television station ORT in privatization. DECEMBER Grabs control of oil company Sibneft at knockdown price in controversial loans-for-shares auction. 1996 JULY Leads group of oligarchs who provide major funding for Boris Yeltsin's reelection and declares that he and six other businessmen have gained control of 50% of the economy. Takes official position in Yeltsin government as vice-secretary of Kremlin security council. 1997 FEBRUARY Sues Forbes for libel in article that depicts him as a gangster. Suit is likely to be heard in 2001. Later, Forbes named Berezovsky as Russia's richest person, with an estimated fortune of $3 billion. NOVEMBER Dismissed by Yeltsin from security council. 1998 APRIL Appointed by Yeltsin to be executive secretary of the Commonwealth of Independent States. 1999 FEBRUARY Raids by prosecutors on the offices of Sibneft, following up on reports that Berezovsky had been bugging Yeltsin's family. MARCH Ousted from his Commonwealth position by Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov for persistent meddling in Kremlin affairs. APRIL Warrant issued by the Moscow General Prosecutor's Office for Berezovsky's arrest on charges of siphoning funds from national airline Aeroflot. Berezovsky says Primakov has mounted a political vendetta against him. Yeltsin sacks Primakov. Arrest warrant canceled. DECEMBER Elected to the State Duma representing Karachayevo-Cherkessia. 2000 JANUARY With Sibneft shareholders, captures a slice of Russia's huge aluminum industry. MARCH Champions ORT television campaign to elect Putin President.
