Hebeler's Hints

Hebeler has made a crusade of improving financial planning and advice for retirees. Three choice tips:

PLAN TO RETIRE EARLY?
Then shut up about it. If everyone knows you're planning to leave, your pay and assignments may suffer.

FORGET REINVESTMENT PLANS.
In your taxable account, instead of plowing dividends and capital-gains distributions back into stocks and mutual funds, take the cash. Then, use the cash to buy the stocks or bonds you need to get back to the portfolio mix that you want.

INSIST ON ''REAL, REAL RETURNS.''
When forecasting the future value of your retirement savings, be sure to reduce your anticipated returns not only by inflation, but also by advisory fees and other investment costs.
