Promising high-end site has signed up 125 art dealers and sells works from their collections online. Average selling price: $9,000. A new area of the site offers works directly from artists' studios, starting around $500.

www.guild.com
Bargain hunters' paradise. Some 10,000 works listed, only by living artists, many of them unknowns chosen by in-house experts. Average selling price: $650. You can also commission artists to do portraits, stained glass, and other works.

sothebys.com
Claims $1 million per week in sales, making it the volume leader. Holds online auctions of works from 4,900 top dealers. Average price: $1,500. Big selection of old masters and artifacts, as well as more contemporary art.
