Mori's Costly Blunders

-- He was appointed premier in secret by LDP elders after Obuchi was hospitalized. That raised suspicions he was not the popular choice within the party.

-- Mori described Japan as a divine nation led by its emperor, in terms used during the 1930s and 1940s, at the height of Japan's militarism. The opposition, charging he had breached the principle of separation between church and state, called an unsuccessful no-confidence vote.

-- He has a record of backing lavish public spending that has landed the government deep in debt.

-- Local media report that Mori spoke at a wedding in 1995 also attended by a crime-family boss. Mori said he didn't know the gangster was there.
