McCain Plays Hardball

Arizona Senator John McCain has kept a low profile since returning to the Senate after his GOP Presidential bid failed. That's about to change. McCain wants to attach his campaign-finance reform bill, which would ban large contributions to political parties, to any measure headed for a floor vote. An obvious candidate: fast-moving legislation that would increase the number of visas for skilled immigrants from 107,000 to 200,000 a year. McCain is locking horns with Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott, who wants only immigration-related amendments, the tech lobby's top priority. McCain is threatening a filibuster if he is thwarted.
