COVER STORY

How We Reviewed the Sites

The staff of Business Week Online chose nine brokers that appeared fairly consistently in the top 10 rankings of Gomez Advisors (www.gomez.com), a Lincoln (Mass.)-based consultant. We added the recently launched Merrill Lynch Online because of the consumer awareness it has generated lately. Each member of our team took two brokers in the same service category: day trading, discount, or full-service. We compared ease of opening an account and account options, commissions and fees, navigation and layout, research and news, and tools and explanatory material. Throughout, we focused on how useful a broker's offerings would be to someone who might be a savvy investor but did not necessarily have trading experience.
