Taiwan's People Have Made Their Choice (int'l edition)

Like many other people here in Taiwan, I followed all those dramatic developments before the presidential election, particularly the ups and downs of the fortunes of the top three candidates (''A reformer in charge,'' Asian Business, Apr. 3).

For several months, we sometimes agonized over the trade-off between the urge to change the status quo for the better, and desire for stability and safety--the latter exacerbated by intimidating gestures and overtones from Beijing.

Now the people of Taiwan have made their choice. Even though my favorite candidate did not win the election, I respect the decision of the majority, the foundation of true democracy. Chen Shui-bian has learned the situations facing Taiwan inside out and moved very cautiously and pragmatically since winning the new presidency.

The Democratic Progressive Party, the party to which he belongs, had also matured over the years, from street fighters to politicians within the Establishment. Not without apprehension, I would very much like to give him the benefit of the doubt and wish Mr. Chen and the new cabinet success for the future of our country.
