The Grapes of Health

HEALTHIER HEARTS
Although research is continuing, moderate consumption of red wine has been linked to a decreased risk of cardiovascular disease, which may explain why the French have a low incidence of such disease--despite their high-fat diet and fondness for smoking.

YOUNGER SKIN
Some research shows that polyphenols, contained in grape skins and seeds, inhibit the action of free radicals, natural byproducts of metabolism that over the years cause skin to lose its smoothness and elasticity. Enthusiasts say that grape polyphenols have a more potent effect than vitamins E and C, which also inhibit free radicals.

REDUCED MUSCLE PAIN
Free radicals also can cause muscle aches and inflammation after exercise. Some doctors advise athletes to drink grape juice and prune juice, rich in polyphenols, before strenuous exercise.
