The Tracks Less Traveled

The Alps aren't the only place to find good skiing in Europe. Here are others:

FINLAND
Try cross-country skiing among the forests of central Finland. Check with travel agency Finnish Country Holidays (www.countryholidays.com, telephone: 358 9 5766 3350).

ROMANIA
Try Poiana Brasov, in the Carpathian Mountains, 170 km from Bucharest. Hotel rooms cost just $60 a night. For information, check sites such as www.inyourpocket.com or www.rotravel.com, or call the Romanian Tourism Office in London at 44 171 2243692.

SLOVAKIA
The Low Tatra resort of Jasna boasts excellent facilities. For information, try the Slovak Tourist Board Web site, www.sacr.sk, or www.travel.sk, a site with links to hotel and transportation booking. Also phone Slovakotour, 421 849 554 8107, for hotel bookings.

SPAIN
Nestled in the mountains 20 minutes from Granada, Sierra Nevada is Europe's southernmost ski resort. But during January and February the skiing is world-class. For information, call the tourist office, 34 958 24-91-91, or check the resort homepage, tuspain.com.
