All through your career, you should keep abreast of the status of your pension plan by checking these documents:

SUMMARY PLAN DESCRIPTION
A description of how the plan works. An employer must give you one within 90 days of your joining a plan, upon your written request, and automatically every 5 years if the plan is amended or 10 years if it isn't.

SUMMARY ANNUAL REPORT
Contains financial data you can consult to see, for example, if the pension plan is making money or has made loans.

INDIVIDUAL BENEFIT STATEMENT
An accounting you may request from your employer every 12 months.
