BUSINESS WEEK E.BIZ -- CLICKS & MISSES

Power to the People?

New online shopping services like Mercata and NexTag try to give consumers power to force prices lower. Price-comparison "bots" crawl the Web to find everyone's prices and show consumers the lowest existing price. Is there a new boss on the Net? Is it you?
Content Mercata didn't have enough information about products it sells. MySimon did the best job of giving consumers basic information and expert reviews. NexTag tells you the price of everything, but almost nothing else.

Community Mercata's chat features let consumers answer each other's questions and plot how low to bid. NexTag offers user product reviews, but the site is so new there are hardly any reviews there. MySimon skips chat and consumer reviews.

Commerce MySimon scores for ability to serve almost my whole shopping list. NexTag and Mercata serve only a few product categories. On NexTag, consumer "name your price" feature didn't lower the cost of anything. Mercata's group-buying process didn't always deliver the best price..

Ease of Use Mercata and NexTag each has a shopping process that's fairly tricky to explain, but their sites walk customers through it cleanly and easily. MySimon has an attractive layout and information is easy to find.
