Edward Zander

[ PRESIDENT, SUN MICROSYSTEMS ]

BORN
Brooklyn, N.Y. on Jan. 12, 1947

UPBRINGING
The son of Jewish immigrants from Europe, he grew up cheering for the Dodgers (''I cried when they left''). In college, he supported McGovern and protested the Vietnam War--even getting gassed during marches in Washington.

EDUCATION
Engineering degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1968; MBA from Boston University in 1975.

CAREER
A senior marketer with computer makers Data General and Apollo Computer Systems in the 1980s, he resisted Sun CEO Scott McNealy's recruiting efforts for five years before joining Sun in 1987.

PASSIONS
Clothes (he favors Armani suits), Porsches (he's on his 6th), and family. He recently arranged a nostalgic return to Cape Cod to celebrate 30 years since he met wife Mona there. ''He's more romantic than I am,'' she admits.

SEEKING A BALANCED LIFE:
He takes breaks when he needs them and urges subordinates to do the same. ''I don't accept 'burnout' as an excuse,'' says Zander. ''This is only a job, and if you're feeling burned out--get a life.''
