| TECH BUYING GUIDE -- HANDHELDS
Product Profile: 3Com Palm V 3COM CORP. www.palm.com $399
Palm borrowed a trick from the cell-phone industry for its Palm V: Make it the smallest and lightest and charge a premium. Working with Palo Alto (Calif.) product design firm Ideo, 3Com cut the thickness in half by replacing the Palm's AAA batteries with rechargeable lithium ion ones. Ideo added curves to soften the handheld and dressed it up in an anodized aluminum skin. 3Com is marketing it more like a must-have fashion accessory instead of a handy computer, and it shows: The Palm V sells for about $100 more than its everyday workalike, the Palm III._ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ |
