Bulking Up in Networking In the past 18 months, Nortel has spent $10.8 billion snapping up data and
voice networking companies to beef up its offerings outside traditional
telephone gear. Here's a sampling.
CLARIFY Maker of software used for customer management such as
San Jose, Calif. corporate help desks and support hotlines. This moves
$2.1 billion Nortel into software applications.October, 1999
PERIPHONICS Maker of voice-response systems for call centers. The
Bohemia, N.Y. company adds new, more powerful software features to
$436 million call-center systems that Nortel markets toAugust, 1999
corporations.
SHASTA NETWORKS Software maker rounds out Nortel's Net products for
Sunnyvale, Calif. phone companies. The software lets them tailor-make
$340 million Internet and data services for each customer and April,
1999 charge accordingly.
CAMBRIAN SYSTEMS Hot maker of optical technology used in metropolitan-
Kanata, Ont. area phone networks. The core product, OPTera Metro,
$300 million provides high-speed, low-cost fiber-optic links
December, 1998 that should help unclog Internet bottlenecks.
BAY NETWORKS The No. 3 maker of data networking equipment was on
Santa Clara, Calif. the rebound when Nortel gobbled it up. Bay bolstered
