The Contenders

If Germany's Mannesmann acquires Orange, four cell-phone titans will be warring in Britain:

MANNESMANN
Landing Orange would make it less vulnerable to takeover by the likes of Vodafone. But it needs a U.S. partner, perhaps MCI WorldCom.

DEUTSCHE TELEKOM
The German giant paid $13 billion for also-ran One 2 One but badly needs partners elsewhere in Europe and in North America.

BT
With AT&T, it covers three continents with wireless. The problem? Telephone alliances have the staying power of Hollywood marriages.

VODAFONE
With its Air Touch acquisition and Bell Atlantic agreement, it's already a major player in America as well as Asia.
