BUSINESS WEEK'S RANKING OF THE TOP 20 EXECUTIVE EDUCATION PROVIDERS:
HOW WE GOT THERE
To come up with our 1999 executive education rankings, we went straight to the customer--the companies that send their high potential executives to external programs or hire providers to train them in house.

In the spring of 1999, we began by locating the executive within each of the 500 largest companies in Corporate America--and 87 more international companies or those with a demonstrated interest in exec ed--responsible for executive development. Sometimes it was the head of executive development, sometimes the chief learning officer, or the head of human resources, sometimes another person altogether

Then, beginning last summer, we sent out a Web-based survey--asking them to mark which of 70 university-based or private sector providers they were familiar with. Next we asked them to rank the top 5 in several functional areas and the top 10 overall. And for the first time this year, we included private companies and nonprofits in the executive education world to our traditional universe of B-schools. We also asked a variety of questions about the state of executive education, what types of providers were the most successful, and how much they spent per year. We heard back from 273 companies, for a response rate of 47%.

To come up with the rankings, we gave each first place mention in the overall rankings 10 points, the second, 9 points, and so on. (For the functional rankings, the scale was five points). We took the average score total of each provider, multiplied it by the number of companies ranking them, and divided it by the number of companies indicating familiarity to come up with the final executive education rankings. At least 20% of the companies had to be familiar with the provider in order for it to be ranked.

To put together our online profiles, we also surveyed 70 providers, as well as 151 schools offering the Executive MBA degree worldwide. We heard back from 63 providers and 100 schools. In putting together our "20 Leading EMBA programs," we relied in part on a ranking survey sent to deans at the 100 EMBA programs.
