Portal Power Major Web sites have the muscle to get equity stakes in hot Net companies without paying any cash. LYCOS The portal has taken equity stakes in six companies so far in exchange for exposure on the Lycos site. The stock holdings range from 5% to 15% and include companies such as auction systems provider FairMarket. EXCITE@HOME Excite has taken warrants in about 30 companies that advertise on its site, including Net escrow provider Billpoint Inc. It plans to add stakes in about 12 companies per quarter. The warrants typically are convertible into equity stakes of 5% to 10%.
