Mar. 2, 1938, in Santiago

EDUCATION
Attended Chile's National Institute, known for producing Presidents. Earned law degree from University of Chile and a PhD in economics from Duke University.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS
Professor at University of Chile and head of economics institute and political science school, 1963-1972. Worked on Allende campaign in 1970; joined the U.N. as senior economist after a 1973 coup toppled Allende. Was instrumental in harnessing vote against Augusto Pinochet in the 1988 referendum that forced the dictator out of office. Served as education minister and public works minister in recent governments.

GOALS
Hold public spending steady, raise savings rate, continue to cut tariffs.

FAMILY
Twice married, with two children.
