Data War Flashpoints

STOCK QUOTES
Exchanges want the ability to keep quotes from fraudulent operators, but online traders such as Charles Schwab and financial services such as Bloomberg worry that the New York Stock Exchange would have monopoly control of quotes.

LEGAL DATA
In 1998, an appeals court dismissed a case by Thomson Corp.'s West Publishing that claimed online publishers could not copy judicial decisions in West's legal directories.

BEST-SELLER LISTS
The New York Times was sued by Amazon.com after the online bookseller was told it could not use the Times best-seller list without a license. A settlement avoids the underlying issue.

REAL ESTATE
The National Association of Realtors worries that Internet postings of vast amounts of house-sale data from its multiple listings could be snatched by pirates, who could then demand referral fees from the original listing agents.
