Europe's Key Predator Banks


ABN AMRO
With big operations in the U.S., Brazil, Hungary, and Thailand, the Dutch banking powerhouse is eager to build market share in the euro zone. Its likely targets: Banca di Roma and Societe Generale.

BANCO SANTANDER
Strongly placed in Latin America, the Spanish giant is bidding for 40% of Portuguese financier Antonio Champalimaud's financial-services empire. Banco Santander is also among the banks eyeing Societe Generale.

DEUTSCHE BANK
It's talking with Dresdner Bank about integrating retail banking networks at home, while working to consolidate its acquisition of Bankers Trust. With assets in Italy, Spain, Belgium, and Greece, it wants to buy in France.

ING GROUP
The Dutch banking and insurance conglomerate already owns Barings in Britain and Belgium's Banque Bruxelles Lambert. It's currently buying the 58.2% of

Germany's BHF-Bank that it does not already own.
