FAMILY
Married since 1970. Wife, Lita, 50, met Ward in college. Two grown sons, both consultants at Arthur Andersen: Lloyd II, 27, a Harvard graduate living in Dallas; Lance, 24, a Stanford grad in San Francisco.

WHERE HE GREW UP
A three-room, 20-ft.-by-20-ft. house with no running water.

FIRST JOB
During high school, construction work in Michigan. On the long morning commutes, Ward played chess with a co-worker.

ROLE MODELS
Parents Rubert, a postman, preacher, and janitor, and Sadie passed on to Ward their love of books and education.

ATHLETIC CAREER
Won a basketball scholarship to college. Was team captain but had team's worst shooting record.

BUSINESS CAREER
Procter & Gamble, 1970-77 and '78-'88; Ford Motor, '77-'78; PepsiCo, '88-'96; Maytag, '96-present. Becomes CEO on Aug. 12.
